The Railway and Canal Historical Society
 
RCHS is the leading transport history society in the UK. Founded in 1954 originally to encourage the study of railways and canal history it now covers many aspects of transport history including shipping and aircraft.
Members receive a journal three times a year and a bulletin six times a year, meetings, conferences and visits are also arranged.

The North East Group holds meetings in York on the first Saturday of the month during the winter starting in October.

Individual membership costs £25 p.a. and application should be made to the RCHS Membership Secretary, Dove Cottage, Thorpe, Ashbourne, Derby DE6 2AW
 
Our 2025 programme includes "Getting the Railway off the ground – the Liverpool Overhead Railway" on Saturday 2nd November via Zoom; "History of the Highland Railway" on 7th December in York; "The story of the ship "Viola" – from Beverley to South Georgia" on 4th January 2025 in York; "The life of Thomas Elliot Harrison" on 2nd February via Zoom. After our (brief) AGM on 1st March in York, there will be a number of short presentations on a variety of transport topics.
